6th Grade - Newspaper Project

Write 3 articles as if you are living in Ancient China. These should be 350 - 500 words in length.

Your Three articles can be any of the types we discussed in class:

  •  Headlines or Breaking News (stuff that happened today and might not be interesting in two weeks
  • Feature Stories like interviews or non time sensitve stories that retain their interest over time.
  • Other types such as Fashion, Real Estate, Politics, Sports, Religion

You will turn your articles in to the shared folder named Ancient China Newspaper on Oberon. Make sure that your name is on your document and you title it with the name of the article. 

Once you have your three articles written you will create your own newspaper using a newsletter template in Pages. You must include your three articles plus tree others form the Ancient China Newspaper folder on Oberon. Make sure that you give credit to the author of the articles in a byline. 

You must create one ad for your newspaper. if you wish you can share that advertisement with others in the shared folder. You may also use any ads that are placed there.

You may add extra sections like comics, crossword, sudoku, or horoscope if you wish. 

When your layout is finished turn your newspaper in on Titania. Name it Newspaper.your Number. Your Last Name and turn it into your class folder.

7th Grade

For Extra Credit you may create a superhero. 

 

  1. Download the male or female character template to your computer. 
  2. Open that file in ScetchBook Express (Right click on the file and choose open with)
  3. Draw and color your superhero in ScetchBook Express
  4. Print your Superhero
  5. On the back of the paper create an origin story for your superhero.

Month 12 - Vegas!

Your parents go to Las Vegas. They lose all their money at the roulette tables. They are now dependent on you for all their care.

    * You must house, clothe and care for your parents.
    * Your food budget triples.
    * They can move in with you if you have a spare room, 
    * You can get a new apartment for all roommates or you can find them an apartment.
    * Make sure that they have transportation available.
    * Your Clothing Budget triples.
    * All other expenses triple

Month 11-Mid-East Oil Crisis

Political tensions in the Middle East are driving up the wholesale price of oil. The price for Gas has gone up $1.00 / Gallon. Adjust your transportation budget accordingly($50 minimum) for November and December.

Public transportation gets a 10% fare increase through December as well. So increase your cost for the rest of the year.

Month 10-Performance Review

Performance Review - it is time for your annual performance review. Play odds and evens to find your result

Odds - You get a favorable performance review at work and receive a raise. Add 10%to your salary for the rest of the year.

Evens - You get an unfavorable performance review at work and receive probation. You must attend training classes on saturdays for the next month.

Month 9 -Sick!

You have a sore throat and go to see the doctor. Pay a $10 copay and use the number generator to see if you get odds or evens.

odds - You have a cold. Get some rest and miss 1 day of work.

evens - You have strep throat. Pay $25 dollars for prescription

Second Opinion

If you would like to go for a second opinion play odds & evens again

odds - You have a cold not strep throat pay another $10 copay

evens - You have tonsillitis. You must have them taken out. It will cost $250 plus you will miss four days of work.

Month 8 -Speeeding Ticket/Jay Walking Ticket

If you do not have a car you have a $100 jay walking ticket

If you drive you have a speeding ticket You have three options
Option 1: Pay it - If you choose to pay, it costs $300 plus your car insurance goes up 10%
Option 2: Traffic School - You must pay your $300 ticket and pay $100 for traffic School, but your insurance does not go up.
Option 3: Fight it - To fight it you must play odds and evens with the number generator.

    Odds - You lose! It costs you $300 plus $150 penalty assessment and your car insurance goes up 10%. You miss 1 day of work
    Evens - You win! You just miss a day of work.

Month 7-What's That noise

You hear a rattling noise coming from your car. You take it to the mechanic. Play odds and evens to see what he says:
    Evens: He finds a soda can in your trunk that has been rattling around - No charge
    Odds: You need a tune up and it will cost $150

Second Opinion
You were not happy with that diagnosis so you take the car to another mechanic. Play odds & evens to find out what he says.
    Odds: He finds a soda can in your trunk that has been rattling around - No charge
    Evens: You need transmission work done. It will cost you $300

Maid of Honor - You have the following expenses:

   1.    $200 for the dress
   2.    $100 for shoes
   3.    $100 for your hair and nails
   4.      $50 for a gift
   5.      $50 for the shower

Best Man - You have the following expenses:

   1. $125 for the tux rental
   2. $  50 for a gift
   3. $500 for bachelor party golf game

You have robbed! The thief or thieves have gotten away with your TV, Computer, iPod, and all your clothes. You must replace all these items.

  • You may spread the cost over 3 months.
  • You must file a police report.
  • If you have renters insurance. You must write a letter to the insurance company to make a claim.
  • The value of the stolen items is $2000
  • Your deductible is $350 (unless you have paperwork that tells you otherwise)
  • You need “receipts” for all the items you replace.

 

Half a page journal entry for the month minimum. 

Month 3 - Toothache

You have a toothache. So you go to see the dentist. Pay $25 for the visit.
Play odds and evens for your result.
    Odds - You have popcorn stuck in your teeth. The dentist cleans it and sends you home with floss.
    Evens - A cavity! You schedule an appointment, take a day off work, the dentist fills it and sends you on your way. It costs you $150 and one day of work.

You may go for a second opinion if you disagree with the dentist
Play odds and evens again for your result.

    Odds - the second dentist finds it is just popcorn and cleans it and sends you home pay another $25 copay.
    Evens - Root Canal! The second dentist finds that you need a root canal. It will cost you 2 days of work and $300

If you have a car you must get an oil change for $30

M&M PROJECT

You need to bring in 4 bags of M&m's. You should be using the regular bags or king size bags and not any seasonal variety like holiday or Valentines

Questions - combine your speadsheet and results in a keynote to explain your findings. Make sure you address all the questions below. Look to see if others have done similar research that either supports or contradicts your findings.

Compare your results with you initial hypothesis. Was your prediction correct? 

Are some colors more numerous?

Do all bags have the same number of candies? What could explain this. 

Why do you think some bags have more of one color or another?

Compare your observations with the findings of students in other groups. Are the same colors more numerous from one group to another?

Is color distribution consistent in bags of differing weights?
